Is this the beginning of a new era?

I guess that by now, many of you have read the joint letter that Microsoft and Novell wrote for the Free and Open Source Software Community. In the letter, the two companies talk about collaboration in the following fronts:

  • Patent coverage
  • Virtualization
  • Virtualization Management
  • Office Open XML
  • Collaboration Framework
  • Mono, OpenOffice and Samba

The front that really puzzles me is the Patent Coverage. Would Patent Coverage mean that we now should be worrying about software patents in Free and Open Source Software?

I really do not know if the collaboration between Microsoft and Novell is good for Free and Open Source Software or it is just a Sell Out as indicated in GrokLaw. What do you think?
